Course Description | Math 130 Flows in one and two dimensions. Fixed points and stability. Phase portraits. Bifurcations. Poincare maps. Limit cycles. Existence and uniqueness of solutions to differential equations. Local and global theorems of continuity and differentiability. Applications: oscillators, predator-prey systems, etc. |
Prerequisites | Math 20D (Introduction to Differential Equations), and Math 20F (Linear Algebra) or Math 31AH (Honors Linear Algebra). |
Textbook | Math 130 use S. H. Strogatz, Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos, Perseus Books Publishing, LLC, 1994. (We plan to cover Chapters 1 – 6.) Other main references: M. W. Hirsch, S. Smale, and R. L Devaney, Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems & An Introduction to Chaos, 2nd ed., Elsevier, 2004. L. Perko, Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, 3rd ed., Springer-Verlag, 2001. |
Lectures | 1:00 – 1:50, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, CSB 001. Math 130 |
Instructor | Professor Bo Li. Office: AP&M 5723. Phone: (805) 534-6932. Email: bli@math.ucsd.edu. Office hours: 2:15 pm – 3:00 pm, Mondays and Wednesdays. |
Discussion Sessions | A01: 8:00 pm – 8:50 pm, Thursdays, AP&M 5402. A02: 9:00 pm – 9:50 pm, Thursdays, AP&M 5402. |
Teaching Assistant | Mr. Pun Wai Tong. Office: AP&M 6432. Email: p1tong@ucsd.edu. Office hours: 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm Thursdays and 11:00 am – 12:00 noon Fridays. |
Homework | Homework will be assigned, collected, and partially graded regularly. Each homework is due in homework dropbox located in AP&M basement by 3:00 pm, Friday. One homework assignment with the lowest score will be dropped. Note: no late homework will be accepted unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization, family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided.
|
Exams | There will be one midterm and one final, close-book and close-note exams in Math 130. No calculators will be allowed in these exams. The final exam will be cumulative. Midterm Exam: 1:00 pm – 1:50 am, Friday, 2/6/2015, CSB 001. Final Exam: 11:30 am – 2:29 pm, Friday, 3/20/2015, place to be determined. Note: neither rescheduled nor make-up exams will be allowed unless a written verification of a valid excuse (such as hospitalization, family emergency, religious observance, court appearance, etc.) is provided. |
Grading | The final course grade will be determined based on the homework and exams with the weights: homework – 25%, midterm exam – 30%, and the final exam – 45%. The grades will be curved. |
